Tribute and human chain by Sramik Nirapotta Forum commemorating 11 years of Tazreen Garments fire: Demand for ensuring proper compensation and rehabilitation of all the workers affected by the accident

The leaders of the Sramik Nirapotta Forum-SNF (Workers’ Safety Forum) have demanded that all workers affected by accidents at work should be properly compensated and rehabilitated. Speakers made this demand on 24 November 2023 during the human chain programme in front of the National Press Club and paying tribute to the graves of the fire victims at Jurain Cemetery by the initiative of SNF commemorating 11 years of Tazreen Garments fire.
Speakers said that even after 11 years of the Tajreen Garments accident, the affected workers and their family members are still living inhumane lives. The families of the dead workers and the injured workers have not yet been taken up for rehabilitation even today. The government has not yet confirmed the punishment of the culprits including the factory owner.
Meanwhile, the speakers demanded to ensure safe factories and workplaces along with trial of all accidents including Tazreen tragedy, appropriate compensation, good treatment and rehabilitation. Besides, to bring all workers under the labour law irrespective of institutional and non-institutional, to ensure national standards of compensation, to establish specialized hospitals for the treatment of workers suffering from occupational diseases and injured in accidents and to set up special units in hospitals and to establish and implement workers’ welfare fund in every industrial plant were also among their demands.
SKOP central leader Rajekuzzaman Ratan, Saifuzzaman Badsha, Abdul Wahed, Nurul Amin, garment trade union leader Khalekuzzaman Lipon, Nahidul Islam Nayan, Salim Mahmud along with trade union and civil society leaders were present in the tribute and human chain programme.
