A specialized training workshop aimed at boosting the capacity of young trade union leaders was held at a local hotel in Chattogram on June 8, 2026, focusing on the international benchmarks of the Hong Kong Convention and its impact on the ship recycling sector.

The workshop, titled “Hong Kong Convention Standards: Opportunities and Challenges in the Ship Recycling Industry,” was organized by the Bangladesh Institute of Labour Studies-BILS.

The program commenced with a welcome address by A. M. Nazim Uddin, Chairman of the BILS LRSC Center Coordination Committee. Dr. Shafiqul Islam Aziz, a prominent expert on the Hong Kong Convention, conducted the technical sessions as the lead trainer.

A total of 22 nominated young trade union leaders representing various national trade unions participated in the day-long event.

The sessions featured detailed, in-depth discussions on the compliance standards of the Hong Kong Convention, the current landscape of the ship recycling industry, its future growth potential, and the pressing challenges it faces. Special emphasis was placed on occupational safety, workplace hazards, and the protection of workers’ legal rights.

Participating leaders noted that the training provided them with critical insights and practical knowledge required to advocate for international safety standards, ensure secure working environments, and safeguard the rights of laborers within the shipbreaking and recycling sector.
