Discussion meeting held on ratification of ILO Convention -189 for domestic workersInternational Labour Organisation-ILO Dhaka Office and Bangladesh Institute of Labour Studies-BILS jointly organised a discussion meeting titled “Ratification of Decent work related ILO Convention -189 for Domestic Workers and analysis the progress of implementing Domestic Workers Protection and Welfare Policy 2015 and future initiatives” on May 30, 2017 at CIRDAP International Conference Center.

The meeting was organised aimed at taking recommendations on ILO Convention-189 ratification and future activities of implementing Domestic Workers Protection and Welfare Policy 2015 and fixing programme outline and strategy.

Among others, ILO Migration Project Chief Technical Advisor Deepa Bharati, Jatiya Garhastha Nari Sramik Union Advisor Abul Hoassain, Bangladesh Employers Federation Labour Advisor Kazi Saifuddin, NCCWE Chairman, and BILS Vice Chairman Anwar Hossain, NCCWE Member Secretary Choudhury Ashiqul Alam, BNWLA Executive Director Adv. Salma Ali, Ain O Salish Kendra Executive Director Sheepa Hafija, Samajtantrik Sramik Front General Secretary Razekuzzaman Ratan, Jatiya Sramik Jote Bangladesh General Secretary Naimul Ahsan Jewel, Jatiya Sramik Federation Acting President Quamrul Ahsan, BILS Executive Director Syed Sultan Uddin Ahmmed, Project Coordinator Nazma Yesmin were also discussed in the meeting. A key note paper regarding this issue was presented in the meeting by BILS Advocacy Coordinator Adv. Mohammad Nazrul Islam,

Emphasizing the need for extending organisation’s comprehensive knowledge on domestic workers, Ministry of Labour and Employment Secretary said, ”We have to prepare the sector in case of ratification of ILO Convension-189. He opined, reqruiting of Domestic Workers through organisations, Trade Union and agencies may increse accountability.

Discussants in the meeting recommended to ensure primary education of child Domestic Workers, to make the monitoring committee more visible, to organise meeting at divisional level, to introduce symbolic inspection, to take action plan and to be more active for ensuring safety of migrant Domestic Workers.
